Ink on paper

How did life come about?

Until recently, myths from different cultures and Darvin's theory of evolution were on offer. In recent years, however, research has converged on the symbiosis theory, which means that “Surviving often the fittest” does not correspond to the basic concept of our planet.

No, the first creatures to move from the sea to land were lichens, a symbiosis of fungi and algae. Only together were they able to assert themselves in the barren rock world. If you delve into the world of microbes, as has only been possible for a little more than 10 years thanks to the large-scale genome analysis of bacteria and viruses, some chapters of the natural sciences are being rewritten. Fungi and bacteria do not adhere to Darwin's theory of evolution at all. They are not genetically stable and freely and happily engage in genetic exchange across species boundaries, so-called “horizontal gene transfer”.

Ink on wet paper creates dialogue and makes symbiosis visible in its unpredictability.

Stones lifted from the Töss by the Bieber and laid out along the way (for me) on pear wood boat

My studio in the Tösstal, which I have been living since 1987, was previously the generator house and water tower of the Kuhn Rikon AG power plant. This included a reservoir from where a pressure pipe led water to the generator house. This pond was declared a nature reserve when water usage rights were terminated. The pond is fed via a canal branched off from the Töss with a rake that is intended to stop siltation and retain leaves, branches, etc. I have been cleaning this rake regularly on my walks for years.

A Bieber family settled there 5 years ago. I already had some close contacts with individual members of the Bieber clan, where we studied each other.

When I started collecting stones from the Töss for my work "longitudinal consideration", a beaver must have observed me, and he also began to lift stones from the Töss and deposited them on the edge of the Töss riverside path. Since I regularly observe the surrounding nature on my walks, I immediately noticed the first stone. A trail led to the water, and I could see scratch marks on the stone surface, which pointed to the beaver as the supplier. I took the stone into the studio to examine it more closely. The beaver gave me the next one and the next and so the work “in dialogue with Bieber” was created.

The stones are predominantly quartzite (metamorphites formerly sandstone)

The boat, carved from pear wood in Bieber style, is intended to lead into the sphere of possibility of communication between species.
